Sunflowers, Zinnias & a Red Barn Dream: Our Day at Western Bell Farm

A West Texas senior rep session turned into one of the most peaceful, playful, and inspiring days I’ve had in a long time.

I’ve always been curious about the sunflower fields in Ennis, Texas. But to be honest—I’ve never wanted to fully commit to the drive without knowing exactly what I’d be walking into. With a full-paying client, that kind of gamble feels risky. I never want to promise something I can’t personally vouch for.
So when I started researching sunflower farms in that area, I stumbled across Western Bell Farm, and something about it clicked immediately. The communication on their end was easy and open. I could ask when the sunflowers were in bloom, how the fields were looking, and whether it was worth the trip. And their pricing? So affordable. It felt like the perfect place to “experiment” with one of my SG reps—low pressure, high potential.
And I’m so glad we did it.Because y’all… it was magic.
My sister-in-law, Sofia—who’s currently in training to become my second shooter for weddings—joined us on this trip too. It was special having her there, not just for the adventure, but as part of this new chapter in my business. We even snapped a few fun shots together in the sunflower field that I’ll always treasure.
The Drive, the Laughs, the Mud
The trip was just shy of three hours, and I rode with my rep, Alyssa, and her mom. We had the best time visiting, planning, and laughing along the way.
As we pulled in, we saw the big red barn and could spot the sunflowers immediately—rows and rows of them stretching in every direction. It was even better than I imagined.
And yes, it was muddy. (Alyssa’s feet were coated by the end.) But luckily the farm had a little hose station so we could clean up—and honestly, the mess just made it more fun.
The Farm Itself
Western Bell Farm is more than just a photo spot. It’s a place to play.
There’s a swing right in the middle of the sunflower field (photographer heaven)
A playground for kids
A petting zoo full of Highland cows, goats and other animals
A concession stand (or you can bring your own picnic)
And you can pick your own flowers—sunflowers and zinnias
It’s family-friendly, photo-friendly, and full of thoughtful details that make it feel like more than just a backdrop—it’s an experience.

The Session with Alyssa
This shoot wasn’t overly styled. I didn’t go in with an editorial concept.I just wanted sunflowers.Sunflowers are summer to me. And that was the vision—capture the light, the color, the warmth of the season.
Alyssa absolutely brought it to life. She embraced every second—from barefoot in the fields to laughing in the zinnias. It was relaxed and radiant. Real joy.
And speaking of zinnias—Western Bell had just as many zinnias as sunflowers, and they were stunning. Next time, I’ll definitely plan a creative concept just for those, too.
What This Day Gave Me
This trip recharged me.
It reminded me that sometimes the simplest sessions—the ones built around color, connection, and a drive with good people—end up being the ones that stick with you the most.
There was nothing stressful about this day. No timeline crunch. No pressure to perform. Just soft light, warm fields, muddy feet, and the kind of golden-hour glow that makes your chest feel light.

Photographers: Go Near Sunset
If you’re planning to shoot at Western Bell Farm, go an hour before sunset and stay through golden hour into blue hour. The light was magical—soft, golden, glowing. I kept chasing it as it dropped behind the trees and honestly wish I hadn’t stopped when I did.
